“Welcome to the Gun and Garden life,” she says with a smile and eye roll. She knows all too well, when it comes to men, that National Lampoon antics always have been, and always will be, a part of life’s adventures. (Did you note that bit of Ozark sexism? She meant it. Why the blankety blank blank is a duck boat parked in front of the house)?

It was my intention to share something a little different than a historical or natural photo of the Ozarks. Something a little more relevant to Ozark life today but rooted in our history. I was hoping that a current snapshot of my life would convey, through the power of analogy, how life in the early 2000’s has developed for many Ozark families with ancestoral bloodlines from predominantly Irish immigrants and Native Americans that made their way here generations ago. While both groups came to the Ozarks because of hardships which in no small way include severe discrimination, they collected here either through forced migratory discrimination or as policy promoted incentivized migration to escape discrimination and build a sustainable lives. In the part of the Ozarks where I live, historical evidence surrounds me that expresses these people had strong wills, strong minds, and industrious hands that created a foundation for a culturally complex and rich region of the world. Education, commerce, art, science, technology, love of nature, and community spirit thrive throughout the plateau and hills of Northwest Arkansas. Love it or hate it, their work tenacity, persistence, ingenuity, creativity, and openness to helping their neighbors succeed  has taken root and cultivated a dynamic region where the “pursuit of happiness” can be pursued and achieved for their descendants and anyone else that is called to the land of the Ozarks.

This photo is of my Great Grandma and Grandpa Sohl. They lived on Jefferson Street in the house my grandpa built. Almost all of the homes on their street were torn down to put in a parking lot. But I will never forget the legacy of these two beautiful humans and grandma’s all-season garden that she tended to with so much pride.

It’s easy to love the beauty of the Ozarks when you can see this in your front yard.

I found a group of pictures above the staircase. I recognize the familiar Ozarks. Here, someone carried a camera down the same trails in a different time, blown by the same wind. Turning over the image of a rising sun, it reads “77” in the hand
of my father.

This photo is of my children’s great grandmother, standing beside her 7’ tall okra.
Her parents migrated to Springdale from Germany in the early 1900’s, making my children a 5th. generation to the area.
I, with my 2/yo son, moved to Springdale in ‘75 after marrying her grandson. Grandma S. immediately accepted both of us, treating us with the same love she gave for the entire family.
Grandma grew up during the great depression, learning how to stretch a dollar and her cooking vessel in ways I had never seen. One of the dearest things to her heart was her gardens, both vegetable and flower.
It was through her that I learned the value of our soil. Teaching me how to plant, care for, harvest, can, make jellies and to beautify my yard and home all with fruits, vegetables and flowers she had grown.
I know she would be thrilled to know that I have passed this appreciation and tradition on to my daughter who in turn is teaching to her daughters.
This picture brings back a flood of memories from my time spent with her. She taught me so much about love, life, church and family that I will be forever grateful for.
To me the Ozarks is about family, time spent with them making precious memories along the way.
